NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OF GUM DISEASE
INCLUDES
Periodontal Scaling -
removes plaque and calculus (tartar) from teeth within the gum sleeves.
Root Planing – smoothes
root surfaces for tight healing of gum tissues to the teeth.
Periodontal Irrigation –
reduces bacteria and thereby promotes healing.
Home Care Training –
provides a technique to control bacteria and shrink gum sleeves.
Most patients initially
prefer four appointments with each being used to treat a separate quadrant of
the mouth under local anesthetic to scale, plane, and irrigate. Some patients prefer that all quadrants of
the mouth be treated in a single appointment.
FOLLOW-UP SCHEDULE:
3-weeks after initial Regular
cleaning and microscope bacteria slide
scaling and planing to
evaluate level of bacteria control.
INTERVAL PROCEDURE
3 months Deep cleaning in the gum sleeves or
pockets of all
teeth
(anesthetic usually is not needed after the
initial quadrant).
6
months Regular
cleaning of the enamel and the part of the teeth out of the gum.
1
year Pocket
Measurements – a periodontal measurement probe is used to determine if the long
sleeves of gum have shrunk to short sleeves.
A regular dental cleaning
involves the part of the tooth that can be seen outside of the gum. A deep dental cleaning (periodontal scaling)
includes the root of the tooth within the sleeve of gum tissue.
